What it is

Black maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a plant growing on the high plateaus of the Andes. It has been used for at least 3,000 years — Indigenous Peruvians used it as both food and medicine before the Incas. It is the rarest form of maca (10–15% of total production) and in Andean tradition represents the outer, masculine energy — the kind that strengthens, gives vitality and direction. It is the maca colour with the greatest emphasis on energy, cognitive function and male fertility.

Key properties

Adaptogen, tonic, aphrodisiac, antioxidant, nerve tonic. The character of black maca rests on glucosinolates, macamides and macaene, sterols, polysaccharides and a complete amino acid profile. A 2018 study comparing the three main maca phenotypes concluded that the lipids and polysaccharides of the black variety showed the highest antioxidant activity, with red less than 10% behind and yellow around 25%.

Uses

Who it is for

For low energy and fatigue, brain fog, reduced memory and concentration, mental focus; for male fertility and sperm quality; for libido and sexual function; for physical and athletic performance; for mood and mental wellbeing. Suitable for both men and women.

Common uses

Daily in a smoothie, juice or yoghurt, as part of routines focused on energy, cognitive focus and reproductive health. Black maca is preferred when the goal is drive and direction rather than soothing — for a more inward, nourishing and stabilising action, red maca is the choice.

Key benefits attributed to it

  • Antioxidant levels. A 2018 study of the three phenotypes showed the lipids and polysaccharides of black maca had the highest antioxidant activity.
  • Metabolism and glucose. A 2018 study in Frontiers in Pharmacology found black maca extract contributes to glucose regulation, a key metabolite for the brain and red blood cells, supporting a healthier metabolism.
  • Sperm production and motility. Between 2006 and 2016 several independent animal-model studies showed black was the only colour that effectively supported sperm production, with an effect on sperm count from the first day and an increase in epididymal sperm after 84 days.
  • Memory and concentration. In 2011 two independent studies, one from China and one from Peru, documented improved memory and concentration skills in laboratory models.
  • Bone health. In 2010 a team of six researchers reported that red and black maca were the most active in improving and protecting bone structure in preclinical models of post-menopausal bone loss.
  • Mood, learning and quality of life. In 2006 a Peruvian team observed that all maca colours contributed favourably to reducing depression, while black additionally improved learning and concentration; a larger 2016 international study documented improvement in mood and overall quality of life.

Herbal combinations

For energy and stamina, traditionally with cacao and guarana. As an adaptogen it combines with ashwagandha and rhodiola. For hormonal balance in menopause with black cohosh and lady's mantle. For cognitive focus with ginkgo biloba.

Preparation and dosage

Maca powder

1 teaspoon of powder (about 3–5 g), once or twice a day, dissolved in a glass of smoothie or juice, or stirred into yoghurt. Daily total 3–10 g.

When to take it

Ideally in the morning or early in the day, given its tonic character. The flavour is slightly caramel-like and pairs well with cacao, banana and oats.

Duration

Maca is usually taken in cycles of 8–12 weeks, with a 1–2 week break. Adaptogenic profiles are assessed after at least 4–6 weeks of regular use.

The amounts given are indicative, based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or if you are on medication, consult a qualified health professional.

Precautions

Maca is generally considered safe for most people and is unlikely to cause side effects at moderate doses. However, because of its effect on hormones, it is avoided alongside hormonal therapies without professional supervision — thyroid medication, hormone-dependent conditions, hormone-dependent cancers, endometriosis, fibroids. As a Brassicaceae plant, maca contains glucosinolates: in hypothyroidism or iodine deficiency, a cooked or gelatinised form is preferred, along with a discussion with your doctor. It is not recommended in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to insufficient data. Given its tonic character, evening use may affect sleep in sensitive individuals. Monitoring is required with raised blood pressure or antihypertensive therapy. Not given to children without medical direction.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between black and red maca?

Black maca is associated with energy, cognitive function, physical performance, male fertility and libido — in Andean tradition it expresses the outer, masculine energy. Red maca focuses on the inner, feminine energy: adrenals, bone density, hormonal balance, prostate and female fertility. Both are suitable for men and women.

How much maca do I take per day?

1 teaspoon of powder, once or twice a day, in a smoothie, juice or yoghurt. Daily total 3–10 g. Preferably in the morning or early in the day given its tonic character.

When do I start noticing a difference?

Maca does not act immediately. As an adaptogen, its profile is assessed after 4–6 weeks of regular daily use. Common practice is cycles of 8–12 weeks with a 1–2 week break.
