Cranberry is powder made from the fruit of Vaccinium macrocarpon. This form is described as organic and is used as food. Its character is tart, astringent, antioxidant and traditionally urinary-supportive.
A-type proanthocyanidins have been studied because they may hinder adhesion of certain bacteria to the urinary lining.
Key properties
Urinary and anti-adhesion. A-type proanthocyanidins are associated with a mechanism that hinders bacterial adhesion to the urinary lining.
Antioxidant. Anthocyanins, flavonols and phenolic acids contribute to the fruit antioxidant profile.
Astringent and tart. Tart flavour and polyphenols characterise its food and traditional use.
Oral anti-adhesion. Similar mechanisms have been examined in laboratory studies of bacterial adhesion in dental plaque.
Uses
Cranberry is frequently used to help prevent recurrent urinary infections and for everyday urinary support, especially by people with repeated discomfort. Its pleasantly tart, fruity flavour works well in smoothies, yoghurt or juice while providing natural polyphenols and proanthocyanidins.
- Recurrent urinary infections. Clinical reviews have examined cranberry products for reducing recurrence in selected groups. Effectiveness depends on form, adherence and proanthocyanidin content.
- Helicobacter pylori. The anti-adhesion mechanism has also been examined for stomach colonisation, usually with juice or standardised products.
- Cholesterol and vessels. Fruit polyphenols have been studied for LDL oxidation, endothelial function and lipid markers.
- Prostate and urinary function. Complementary studies have examined lower urinary symptoms in men without equivalence to medical intervention.
- Mouth and dental caries. Laboratory data examine bacterial adhesion and biofilm, but acidic powder should not remain on teeth.
- Homocysteine and antioxidant status. Small studies have examined oxidative-stress and homocysteine markers within dietary intake.
Preparation & dosage
Mix 1–2 teaspoons of powder daily into water, a smoothie, yoghurt or porridge. Maintain adequate water intake and rinse the mouth afterwards because of acidity.
Amounts are indicative and are based on traditional use and published herbal literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a healthcare professional.
Precautions
Burning urination, painful frequency, fever, chills, flank pain, blood in urine, pregnancy or symptoms in a man require prompt professional assessment.
Large amounts may upset the stomach or cause diarrhoea. Use caution with warfarin and with a history of calcium oxalate stones. Regular use during pregnancy, breastfeeding or childhood should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
