What it is

Louminia are the dried cup-shaped calyces of Ballota acetabulosa. In Greek tradition they are used as natural floating wicks for an oil lamp. The small hollow calyx holds oil and supports a calm, small flame.

Key properties

Every piece is natural and may vary slightly in size, shape and burn time. It contains no synthetic cord. This product is intended for practical, decorative and ceremonial use, not as tea or for ingestion.

Uses

  • as a plant wick in a small lamp filled with olive oil or another suitable vegetable oil
  • for household devotional use and lighting before icons
  • during festivals, memorial days and quiet reflection
  • as a natural alternative to manufactured floating wicks
  • in folklore and educational demonstrations of older Mediterranean customs.

Preparation & application

  1. Select two completely dry, intact calyces and remove any remaining seed.
  2. Nest one calyx inside or inverted against the other to form a stable small wick.
  3. Rest them on the oil surface in a shallow fireproof lamp.
  4. Allow them to absorb a little oil and carefully light the tip.
  5. If the flame becomes large, extinguish it, allow the wick to cool and reduce the exposed portion.

Use clean olive oil or another vegetable oil suitable for an oil lamp. Do not add essential oils, alcohol or flammable scented liquids.

Precautions

Combustion product — not food. Never leave a flame unattended. Keep the lamp on a stable non-combustible surface, away from curtains, paper, draughts, children and pets. Do not move the vessel while it burns or while the oil is hot. Ventilate the room and extinguish the flame fully before sleeping or leaving.
