Traditional herbal literature describes yarrow as antispasmodic, astringent, bitter tonic, diaphoretic, emmenagogue, anti-inflammatory and mildly sedative. Older sources also use the terms urinary antiseptic, hypotensive and antipyretic. Tannins, flavonoids, bitter principles and volatile oil contribute to this broad herbal profile. Contemporary herbal literature recognises traditional use for mild digestive complaints, temporary loss of appetite, menstrual cramps and small superficial wounds.
The best-documented traditional uses include:
Broader traditional references include inflammation of the bowel and female reproductive system, colds, flu, fever, digestive infections, urinary tract infections and cystitis.
For appetite, yarrow is chosen before food and for digestion after food; during colds and fever it is traditionally used warm for its diaphoretic character. Older sources also associate it with improved circulation, varicose veins, lower blood pressure and thrombotic conditions. Externally, yarrow tea or a compress is recorded for minor injuries, slight bleeding and clean superficial wounds.
Add 1.5–2 g of flowers to 200–250 ml boiling water, cover for 5–10 minutes and strain. Drink up to 3 times daily. For appetite it is taken about 30 minutes before food; for digestion, after a meal.
Prepare 3–4 g in 250 ml water, allow to cool and apply with a clean compress.
The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
For digestion it is traditionally combined with chamomile or peppermint, and with lemon balm in a gentle menstrual tea.
For appetite take it 30 minutes before food; for mild indigestion take it after.
Apply cooled tea with a clean dressing only to a small superficial wound.
Up to 2 weeks for digestion and up to 1 week for menstrual cramps or wounds.
