What it is

White kaolin clay is a natural mineral, product of feldspar weathering, with fine texture and neutral pH. Used for gentle exfoliation of face and body, masks and natural cosmetics. It is the mildest of all clay types — suitable for sensitive and dry skin.

Key properties

White kaolin clay is composed mainly of aluminium silicate (kaolinite) and is naturally rich in trace minerals (iron, magnesium, calcium). Due to its mild action, it is considered the most suitable clay type for sensitive, dry and mature skin.

Uses

White kaolin is used for gentle exfoliation of the face and body, on dry, sensitive and mature skin, as an ingredient in:

  • soaps
  • masks
  • talc
  • baby products

in tooth powders, and as a natural drying agent for pimples and irritated areas.

Its applications focus on gentle skin cleansing, smoothing and natural care without harsh ingredients. It is also used in natural deodorants.

Mineral information

Mineral name: Kaolinite — Al₂Si₂O₅(OH)₄

Group: Silicate minerals (aluminosilicates)

Other names: Kaolin, China Clay, White Clay.

Colour: White to off-white.

Characteristic composition: Aluminium silicate, trace minerals (iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium).

Historical note: Named after the Kao-Ling ("high hill") region of China, where it was mined from the 7th century. In Europe, systematically used since the 18th century in cosmetics and porcelain.

How to use

Face mask (gentle exfoliation)

1 tsp of white kaolin mixed with lukewarm water (or rose water, milk, yoghurt for dry skin) until a creamy paste forms. Apply to clean skin, avoiding eyes and lips. Leave 10–15 minutes (without letting it dry completely — spray with water if needed). Rinse with lukewarm water.

Body mask

2–3 tbsp in water or oil (almond, jojoba). Same procedure.

Frequency

1–2 times per week for normal/combination skin, once a week or less for dry/sensitive.

Combinations

For hydration: with honey, yoghurt, avocado. For anti-ageing: with rose water, argan oil. In soaps: with lavender, chamomile, calendula.

Precautions

  • Do not let it dry completely on the skin — may cause skin dehydration.
  • Mix only in glass or plastic bowls — contact with metal reduces effectiveness.
  • Not recommended on open wounds without professional advice.
  • Internal use (ingestion) only after healthcare professional advice — self-treatment not recommended.
  • Store in a dry, cool place, away from moisture.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between white and green clay?

White is the mildest — suitable for dry, sensitive, mature skin. Green has greater absorbency and is suitable for oily/combination skin and acne.

Can I use it daily?

Not as a full mask. As gentle exfoliation 1–2 times per week is enough. For daily use, small amounts can be added to natural soap or shower gel.

Do I need to moisturise after use?

Yes, always. Clay leaves skin clean but slightly dehydrated. After rinsing, apply toner and moisturising cream or oil (jojoba, almond, argan).
