What it is

Walnut leaves are rich in tannins and traditionally used as an external decoction for minor skin inflammation and excessive sweating of hands or feet.

Key properties

Traditional literature describes walnut leaf as astringent, detoxifying, anti-inflammatory, expectorant and laxative. The best-documented use of comminuted walnut leaf is external only. Tannin astringency explains its use on oily or irritated skin and scalp.

Uses

Recorded uses of the herb include:

  • acne
  • psoriasis
  • eczema
  • superficial dermatitis
  • fungal complaints
  • sunburn
  • itchy scalp
  • dandruff
  • hair loss
  • excessive sweating

Historical sources also mention asthma, cough, blood sugar, liver stimulation and laxative use, without this constituting a drinking instruction.

Externally it is applied to a small area as a clean dressing or hand and foot bath. It is traditionally used as a hair rinse for scalp, dandruff and shine and may temporarily darken or stain skin and hair. The documented use of the comminuted leaf is external; no drinking dose is provided.

Preparation & dosage

External decoction

Gently simmer 4–6 g of leaves in 200 ml water, allow to cool and apply with a clean dressing 2–4 times daily. For sweaty hands or feet apply for up to 30 minutes twice daily. Use for no more than 1 week.

Internal use

No drinking dosage is supplied for this leaf form.

The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Pairs well with

For mild external irritation it combines with calendula, and for a scalp rinse with nettle. Patch-test a small skin area before using a blend.

Choose herbs to add together with Walnut leaves.

Precautions

  • External use: For adults and external use only.
  • External use: Do not apply to open wounds, large skin injuries or serious infection.
  • External use: It may temporarily stain the skin.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Avoid with walnut allergy, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Duration & persistent symptoms: Seek assessment if irritation worsens or persists beyond 1 week.

Frequently asked questions

Can walnut leaves be taken as tea?

Not in this form. The documented use is external, so no drinking dose is provided.

How are walnut leaves used for sweaty hands or feet?

Use the cooled decoction as a local bath for up to 30 minutes twice daily, for no more than 1 week.

Can walnut-leaf decoction cause staining?

Yes. Its tannins may temporarily darken skin, hair, fabrics or porous surfaces.
