Wild pansy is the flowering aerial herb of Viola tricolor. Western herbal practice describes a mild expectorant, diuretic, depurative and skin-soothing character.
It contains mucilage, flavonoids, saponins, tannins and salicylate derivatives. Tradition focuses on mild skin complaints and catarrhal symptoms, while internal and external use should remain short and proportionate to the condition.
Key properties
Skin-soothing and depurative. Mucilage, tannins and flavonoids support use for mild itching, dryness and seborrhoeic tendencies.
Mild expectorant. Saponins and mucilage are associated with traditional use in cough with catarrhal irritation.
Mildly diuretic. Traditionally used to increase urine flow and support fluid elimination.
Astringent and anti-inflammatory. Tannins provide mild astringency while flavonoids are studied in inflammatory mechanisms.
Uses
Applications concern traditional self-care for mild symptoms and do not cover infected, extensive or persistent lesions.
Eczema and itching. An internal infusion or lukewarm external compress is traditionally used for mild eczema, itching and irritation. Acne and seborrhoeic skin. Depurative and mildly astringent use concerns oily skin or minor blemishes, without application to open wounds.
Cough and bronchial irritation. Its mucilaginous and expectorant profile is associated with traditional use in mild cough and bronchial catarrh. Cystitis and urination. Its mild diuretic character has been used for urinary comfort. Pain, fever or blood in urine require assessment.
Rheumatic complaints. Older depurative and diuretic use was associated with joint stiffness and general fluid elimination.
Preparation & dosage
For an infusion, use one teaspoon of herb per cup of boiling water, cover for 10–15 minutes and strain. Recorded use is up to three times daily for a short period.
For external use, allow the thoroughly strained infusion to become lukewarm and apply with a clean compress to a small area. Do not keep the liquid for the next day.
Amounts are indicative and are based on traditional use and published herbal literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a healthcare professional.
Precautions
People allergic to violets or sensitive to salicylates should use caution. Large amounts may cause nausea or gastrointestinal discomfort.
Do not apply to eyes, mucosa, deep wounds or infected skin. A spreading rash, fever, breathlessness, persistent productive cough or urinary pain requires professional assessment. Seek advice during pregnancy, breastfeeding and for children.
