What it is

Vervain is a slender, bitter European herb and is not lemon verbena. It is traditionally used for mild digestive discomfort, nervous tension and teas intended for winding down after a demanding day.

Key properties

Vervain is traditionally described as a bitter, antidepressant, antispasmodic, mildly diaphoretic and galactagogue herb that supports digestion. Verbenalin and other iridoids contribute to its bitterness. Modern evidence remains mainly traditional.

Uses

Recorded uses of the herb include:

  • nervous exhaustion
  • melancholy
  • depression
  • severe stress
  • indigestion
  • bloating
  • colic
  • dysmenorrhoea are recorded in traditional use

References to milk production or facilitating labour require particular caution.

It is chosen for mild digestive discomfort or temporary nervous tension. Historically it was used during the final two months of pregnancy to facilitate labour; this is a historical record, not modern use guidance.

Preparation & dosage

Herbal tea

Add 1.5–2 g of dried herb to 200 ml boiling water, cover for 10 minutes and strain. Drink 1–3 times daily for a short period.

The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Combinations with other herbs

For relaxation it may be combined with lemon balm or chamomile. For digestive comfort it pairs with peppermint or fennel.

Precautions

  • Adverse effects: Despite older reports of no adverse effects, current safety data are limited.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Contraindicated in pregnancy because of historic uterine-stimulating use and not recommended during breastfeeding or childhood.
