What it is

Thuja is an aromatic conifer with an active volatile oil containing thujone. The dried herb is supplied as raw material, not as a household drinking tea.

Key properties

Traditional literature describes thuja as expectorant, smooth-muscle stimulating, diuretic, astringent and alterative. The same activity behind historical uses also explains the risk of thujone-related neurotoxicity, seizures and irritation. These uses are of botanical and historical interest only and are not a recommendation for oral use.

Uses

Recorded uses of the herb include:

  • bronchial catarrh
  • urinary incontinence from loss of muscle tone
  • delayed menstruation
  • psoriasis
  • rheumatism

External history includes warts, ringworm and oral thrush. Older homeopathic literature mentions smallpox vaccination; this is historical information, not modern guidance.

Internal use of the twigs is not suggested. Modern use for warts concerns ready-made medicinal or homoeopathic preparations and professional guidance.

Preparation & dosage

Raw material — not for drinking

No household dose is provided for infusion, decoction, tincture or external preparation. This form is for suitably trained professional handling only.

The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Combinations with other herbs

No oral combinations with other herbs are suggested. Combinations in professional external products depend on their exact formula and cannot be translated into a household recipe.

Precautions

  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding & age: Absolutely contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding and avoided in children, epilepsy, seizure history, kidney or liver disease.
  • Adverse effects: Ingestion may cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, seizures and organ injury.
  • Essential oil: Do not use thuja essential oil.
  • Precaution: Seek urgent medical help after suspected ingestion.

Frequently asked questions

Can thuja herb be prepared as tea?

No. No household dose is supplied and the dried herb is offered only as a specialist raw material.

Why does thuja require particular care?

Its volatile oil contains thujone, and ingestion may cause vomiting, seizures and organ injury.

Can loose thuja be used on warts?

Not as a homemade preparation; current applications concern specialist products and professional guidance.
