Traditional literature describes St John's wort as antidepressant, soothing, calming, wound-healing, astringent, antispasmodic, choleretic, antiviral, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and immune-tonic. Hypericin, hyperforin and flavonoids shape its distinctive profile. Human clinical research on mild depressive episodes has been conducted with specific extracts.
Recorded uses of the herb include:
Painful joints and muscles, cold sores, shingles, eczema, wounds, sunburn and stomach ulcer also appear in older use, with a different preparation required for each context.
External applications for skin, wounds, burns, joints and muscles concern St John's wort infused oil—a separate oil preparation—not direct application of the dry herb. Use requires particular care because of its many interactions.

The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
For a gentle evening tea it may be combined with lemon balm only after interactions have been excluded. In traditional external preparations it may be paired with calendula; this does not refer to the drink.
Not without professional approval because it interacts with many medicines, including antidepressants, contraceptives and anticoagulants.
