What it is

Speedwell is a mild, slightly bitter European herb. Folk herbalism uses it as a simple digestive tea and for throat comfort, but it is not considered a first-line herb for serious symptoms.

Key properties

Speedwell is now regarded as a secondary herb whose information comes mainly from tradition. It is described as digestive, appetite-stimulating and mildly astringent; iridoids and tannins explain its bitter character. Older sources also attribute nervine-tonic and wound-healing uses.

Uses

Recorded uses of the herb include:

  • stomach atony
  • stomach cramps
  • indigestion
  • reduced appetite

are the main traditional references. Older herbal literature also associates speedwell with nervousness, depression, memory support, eczema, wound healing, cholesterol and eye conditions.

It is used after meals or in simple herbal blends. Skin and wound references are traditional and concern small clean areas. Eye conditions appear only in historical references; a non-sterile infusion is not recommended as an eye wash.

Preparation & dosage

Herbal tea

Add 1.5–2 g of dried herb to 200 ml boiling water, cover for 10 minutes and strain. Drink 1–3 times daily.

The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Pairs well with

For gentle digestion combine with peppermint or chamomile. For throat comfort it may be paired with marshmallow or well-filtered mullein.

Choose herbs to add together with Speedwell herb.

Precautions

  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding & age: Safety data are insufficient in pregnancy, breastfeeding and children, so medicinal use should be avoided.
  • Allergies & sensitivities: Tannins may upset a sensitive stomach or affect medicine absorption; allow a 2-hour interval.
  • Duration & persistent symptoms: Seek advice if symptoms persist beyond 2 weeks.

Frequently asked questions

When is speedwell tea usually taken?

It is traditionally taken after food as a mild, slightly bitter digestive tea.

Can speedwell tea be used as an eye wash?

No. Such references are historical, and homemade infusion is not sterile.

Should speedwell be separated from medicines?

Yes. Leave about 2 hours because tannins may affect their absorption.
