What it is
Spanish broom is a deciduous shrub of 1–3 metres, native to the Mediterranean basin, with long slender near leafless stems and intensely yellow, fragrant flowers. It blooms from May to September, and the flowers are gathered in the same season, chiefly in the morning hours.
Traditional use
In folk practice the flowers were used as a strong diuretic and purgative, and as a cardiac tonic on account of the alkaloids they carry. In larger quantities they induced vomiting.
Alongside these there are two uses that involve no consumption and continue today: the flowers are worked in perfumery, for the extraction of essential oil, and as a natural yellow dye for textiles and yarn.
Sparteine & toxicity
The flowers and the other parts of the plant contain sparteine and further alkaloids, compounds that act on the nervous and cardiovascular systems.
- Consumption may cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, disturbances of heart rhythm, a drop in blood pressure, and even paralysis or respiratory failure.
- Internal use is not recommended by modern herbal practice without strict medical supervision.
- Pregnancy: Contraindicated.
- Hypertension and cardiovascular conditions: Contraindicated.
