A saponin-rich root for natural cleaning of delicate fabrics, traditional use in halva production and external cleansing applications.
Key properties
Its triterpenoid saponins foam in water, explaining both cleansing action and traditional use as a natural emulsifying and foaming agent.
Uses
The saponin-rich root has traditionally been used as an expectorant for cough and bronchitis, as a laxative and diuretic, and in references to gallstones. Externally it was used in washes for eczema, acne and psoriasis. Because saponins can be irritating, internal use is not provided here as a home direction. In halva making, follow a tested professional recipe.
Preparation & dosage
Halva making
Follow a tested professional recipe.
Amounts are indicative. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
Combinations with other herbs
For an external cleanser it may be combined with calendula or chamomile. Professional confectionery follows a defined recipe rather than an improvised herbal blend.
Precautions
Saponins may irritate the digestive tract and cause nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea. Home internal use is not recommended. Avoid in pregnancy, breastfeeding, gastrointestinal sensitivity and children.
Frequently asked questions
Why does it foam?
Natural saponins reduce water surface tension and create foam.
Can it clean delicate textiles?
Yes, using a dilute decoction after testing a hidden area.
Can it be drunk as tea?
Home drinking use is not recommended because of the irritant saponin load.
