What it is

Rumex acetosella is a small perennial herb in the Polygonaceae family with a distinctly tart taste. Traditional use associates it with digestive comfort, mild diuretic use, astringency and antioxidant support.

It is the species listed as sheep sorrel in the Essiac formula, the historical four-herb mixture popularised by Rene Caisse and associated with complementary use around cancer. Research on the complete mixture has not produced clear clinical conclusions and it does not replace medical treatment.

Key properties

It contains flavonoids, tannins, anthraquinones, organic acids and oxalates. Its profile is associated with astringent, mildly diuretic, digestive and antioxidant properties.

Uses

Traditional herbal practice uses sheep sorrel for:

  • digestion
  • diuresis
  • urinary comfort
  • general toning

Tannins contribute to its astringency, while phenolic constituents are being studied for antioxidant and other biological activities.

In culinary use, young leaves are traditionally eaten in small amounts for their tart flavour. The dried product is mainly used as an infusion or in specifically formulated herbal blends.

Preparation & dosage

Mild infusion

Use 1 level teaspoon, approximately 1–2 g, in 200–250 ml boiling water. Cover for 8–10 minutes and strain. Drink once daily and, when well tolerated, up to twice daily for a short period.

Essiac follows a separate formula with defined proportions of four herbs.

The quantities are indicative and based on traditional use and published herbal-medicine literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a healthcare professional.

Combinations with other herbs

In Essiac, sheep sorrel is combined with burdock root, slippery elm bark and Indian rhubarb root. In a simple digestive infusion, it may be paired with peppermint or fennel.

Precautions

  • Oxalates: Avoid with calcium-oxalate stones, serious kidney disease or disorders of calcium metabolism.
  • Amount and duration: Do not use in large amounts or long term. Excessive intake may cause nausea, gastric discomfort or diarrhoea.
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding and children: Use only after professional advice.
  • Long-term medication: Check suitability with a healthcare professional.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the sorrel species used in Essiac?

Yes. Rumex acetosella, or sheep sorrel, is one of the four principal Essiac herbs, together with burdock, slippery elm and Indian rhubarb.

What is its correct English common name?

The correct English name is Sheep Sorrel. Other common names include Red Sorrel and Field Sorrel.

Who should use particular caution?

Because of its oxalates, avoid it with calcium-oxalate stones or serious kidney disease. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, children and prolonged use require professional advice.
