What it is

Saw palmetto berries are associated with prostate health, frequency and nocturia, urinary flow, men’s health and research interest in androgenetic hair loss.

Key properties

The fruits contain fatty acids and phytosterols. Modern clinical and European evidence focuses on lipophilic fruit preparations for mild symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Uses

Saw palmetto berries and their liposterolic preparations have been studied for symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), including urinary frequency, nocturia and weak urinary flow. Traditional and research references also include libido and male fertility, inflammatory mechanisms of the prostate, androgen-related mechanisms associated with hair loss, and preclinical prostate-cancer research.

Preparation & dosage

Dried berry decoction

Simmer 1–2 g of ground berries in 1 cup of water for 10–15 minutes, 2–3 times daily.

Powder with a meal

Take a total of 1.5–3 g of powder daily, divided into 2–3 servings with a meal containing fat. Saw palmetto fatty acids and sterols are fat-soluble, so food supports their utilisation.

Traditional oil macerate

Combine 1 part coarsely ground berries with 4–5 parts vegetable oil. Infuse in a water bath at 50–60°C for 2–4 hours, or in a warm shaded place for 3–4 weeks with daily shaking, then strain carefully.

Amounts are indicative and based on traditional use and published herbal literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Combinations with other herbs

In traditional men’s blends it is paired with pumpkin seed or nettle root after urological assessment.

Precautions

Frequency, blood in urine, painful urination, retention or worsening symptoms require urological assessment. Caution with anticoagulants and before surgery. Avoid in pregnancy, breastfeeding and under 18 years. Gastrointestinal discomfort may occur.

Frequently asked questions

How are the dried berries best used?

Ground and taken with a fat-containing meal, or prepared as a traditional oil macerate, because their characteristic fatty acids and sterols are fat-soluble.

Which urinary concerns are associated with saw palmetto?

Urinary frequency, nocturia and reduced urinary flow in the context of men's and prostate health.

Is it associated with hair loss?

Research interest focuses mainly on androgenetic hair loss and berry preparations.
