What it is

Rosehip is the red accessory fruit of the dog rose. It is used as a tart aromatic drink and traditionally for general vitality, colds and mild digestive support.

Key properties

Rosehips contain vitamin C, carotenoids, polyphenols, pectins and organic acids. Together these give the fruit antioxidant, tonic and mildly anti-inflammatory value.

Uses

Rosehips are traditionally used for:

  • colds
  • general weakness
  • convalescence
  • mild constipation
  • diarrhoea
  • digestive support

Their pleasantly tart flavour is particularly well suited to winter drinks.

Modern clinical studies of rosehip preparations have reported positive findings for pain and function in osteoarthritis, while their polyphenols and carotenoids are studied for antioxidant activity.

Preparation & dosage

Decoction

Crush 2–3 g fruits, add to 250 ml water and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain very carefully to remove any irritating hairs. Drink once or twice daily.

The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
