Red henna is a fine powder made from Lawsonia inermis leaves. It is used as a plant-based hair colour that develops warm copper to auburn tones depending on the natural hair base and application time.
Key properties
Its characteristic dye molecule is lawsone, a naphthoquinone that binds to keratin. Tannins and other plant constituents contribute to a fuller, glossier feel. Henna acts as a deposit-only colour over the natural shade.
Uses
Its main use is natural hair colouring with copper and red highlights. It can provide gradual grey coverage, added shine and body, and a result that continues to develop during the first 48 hours.
Henna also has a history in decorative skin art when the powder is pure and suitable for that purpose. This page prioritises hair application.
Preparation & application
Allow about 70 g for short hair and increase the amount for long or very thick hair. Gradually mix the powder with lukewarm water until a thick paste forms.
Cover and rest the paste for 6–12 hours to develop the dye. Apply section by section to clean hair, wear gloves and cover with a cap. Leave for 1–2 hours, rinse thoroughly and assess the final colour after about 48 hours.
Precautions
Perform a sensitivity test 48 hours before first use and a strand test even if you have used henna previously. This is a 100% botanical composition with no PPD or other synthetic dyes. Do not apply to an irritated or broken scalp and avoid eye contact. Ask a hair professional before combining henna closely with chemical colouring or perming.
Frequently asked questions
What shade does red henna produce?
It develops copper to auburn tones depending on the natural base and the length of application.
How much henna is needed for short hair?
About 70 g is an indicative amount for short hair, while long or thick hair requires more.
When can the final colour be assessed?
The shade oxidises and settles gradually, so the final result is best assessed after about 48 hours.
