What it is

Pokeweed root comes from Phytolacca americana, a robust perennial native to eastern North America. In Western herbal tradition, this root is known as a particularly potent botanical material associated with lymphatic swellings and swollen glands, as well as rheumatic and respiratory complaints.

Key properties

The root contains triterpenoid saponins, including phytolaccosides, along with biologically active proteins such as mitogenic lectins and the cysteine protease phytolacain G. Traditional herbal literature described it as stimulant, anticatarrhal and antirheumatic. The emetic and laxative effects found in older accounts reflect toxicity and are addressed under Precautions.

Uses

Historical Western herb literature connects pokeweed root with lymphatic congestion and swollen glands, including adenitis. It was also recorded for upper-respiratory catarrh, tonsillitis and laryngitis, and in traditions concerning mastitis and rheumatic complaints. These references describe historical practice and place the root within specialist herbal use.

Historical external practice also records poultices, ointments and lotions for scabies and other skin parasites. These references belong to traditional use and require professional evaluation.

Preparation & dosage

Recorded dosage (literature references)

In older Western herbal literature, including classic Eclectic Medicine texts, the root is regarded as a low-dose herb.

Dried root (powder or infusion): 60–250 mg in total per day—an extremely small amount, of the order of the tip of a spoon. “Tip of a spoon” indicates only the order of magnitude and is not a reliable household measurement. Precise weighing and direct guidance from a qualified professional are required because of the risk of toxicity.

Precautions

Pokeweed root is toxic and self-medication is not recommended. Do not prepare or take the root without direct professional supervision. Do not use it internally or externally during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or in children. Ingestion can cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, severe diarrhoea, dizziness and low blood pressure. Bloody vomiting or diarrhoea and marked weakness require emergency care. Contact a poison centre or emergency medical service immediately after accidental ingestion or when symptoms appear. External use can irritate the skin and also requires professional supervision.
