What it is

Pilewort is an early-spring herb with a distinct place in European folk tradition around external care of haemorrhoidal discomfort and local irritation.

Main properties

The dried herb has an astringent and traditionally soothing profile. Its historical reputation for internal and external haemorrhoids explains the English name pilewort. The fresh plant contains irritant compounds that are partly transformed by drying.

Uses

In European folk tradition, pilewort was associated mainly with external applications for haemorrhoidal discomfort, which explains the common names pilewort and zochadochorto. Older records also mention itching and local discomfort.

Preparation & dosage

Use only under the guidance of a qualified professional due to the risk of toxicity.

Quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published herbal-medicine literature. For prolonged use or if you take medication, consult a healthcare professional.

Pairs well with

In external tradition a pilewort compress is paired with calendula or agrimony for their astringent profile. It is never combined in a drinkable infusion.

Choose herbs to add together with Pilewort herb.

Precautions

Avoid ingestion and application to open, bleeding, wet or infected skin or injured mucosa. Avoid during pregnancy, breastfeeding, childhood, liver disease and Ranunculaceae allergy. Severe pain, significant bleeding, black stools or persistent haemorrhoids requires medical assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Can pilewort be drunk as a tea?

No. Despite older oral use, this herb is limited to brief external application.

Can it be used on bleeding haemorrhoids?

No. Do not apply to open or bleeding skin. Bleeding requires assessment.

How is the compress prepared?

Use 1 teaspoon of herb in 250 ml boiling water for 10 minutes. Let it cool completely, strain well and apply with clean cotton for 5–10 minutes, for up to 3 days.
