What it is

Pennyroyal is a strongly aromatic mint found in the Greek countryside. It is chiefly selected for its traditional digestive character and its distinctive cool, pungent aroma.

Key properties

Its essential oil contains mainly pulegone and menthone. Traditional herb literature describes pennyroyal as carminative, diaphoretic, tonic and aromatic. Pulegone accounts for both the powerful scent and the need for strict safety precautions.

Uses

European herbal tradition links pennyroyal with flatulence and abdominal colic, mild indigestion and post-meal heaviness. It has also been traditionally used for cough comfort and mild restlessness.

Its strong scent is also valued as an aromatic insect repellent in herb sachets and outdoor areas.

Preparation & dosage

Recorded dosage

Safe use is limited to mild consumption as an infusion made from dried herb and for a short period.

FormTraditional / safe dosage
Infusion (tea)1 to 2 g of dried herb, approximately 1 teaspoon, in 1 cup of boiling water. Infuse for 5–10 minutes.
  • Frequency: 1 to 2 cups daily for no more than 3–5 consecutive days.

Amounts are indicative and based on traditional use and published herbal literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified health professional.

Precautions

Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding because its traditional emmenagogue and uterine-stimulating use carries serious risk. It is also unsuitable for children, people with liver or kidney disease, and anyone using medicines that can burden the liver. Pennyroyal essential oil must not be swallowed. Dizziness, nausea or gastrointestinal discomfort require immediate discontinuation.

Frequently asked questions

How is pennyroyal different from mint?

It belongs to the same genus, but it is Mentha pulegium, with a much stronger aroma and a different essential-oil profile.

What is its main traditional use?

Its best-known traditional use concerns digestion, flatulence and abdominal colic.

Does pennyroyal require special care?

Yes. Use only a mild infusion of dried herb in the stated amounts and for a short period. Pennyroyal essential oil must never be swallowed.
