What it is

A gentle relaxing herb with recognised European traditional use for symptoms of mental stress and support of sleep. Passionflower is chiefly suited to nervousness, inner tension and temporary insomnia.

Key properties

Flavonoids such as vitexin and isovitexin, together with other phenolics, characterise the herb. Its key qualities are relief of mild symptoms of mental stress and support of natural sleep.

Uses

The European monograph covers traditional use for mild mental stress, restlessness and anxiety and as a sleep aid for temporary insomnia, especially when mental overactivity or overwork is present.

Older herbal literature includes passionflower as an antispasmodic and analgesic herb in neuralgia, hysteria and seizures and in movement manifestations of Parkinson’s disease. Modern research focuses mainly on GABA-related mechanisms, anxiety and sleep quality.

Preparation & dosage

Infusion

Pour 150 ml of boiling water over 0.5–2 g of herb, cover for 10 minutes and strain. Take up to 3–4 times daily; for sleep, use the final serving 30–60 minutes before bedtime.

The quantities are indicative and based on traditional use and published herbal-medicine literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a healthcare professional.

Combinations with other herbs

For evening relaxation it combines with lemon balm, valerian or hops. For mild daytime nervous tension it pairs with lime flower or lavender.

Precautions

Use in adults and adolescents over 12. Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding because safety data are insufficient. It may cause drowsiness and add to sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines or alcohol. Avoid driving if alertness is affected. If symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks, seek assessment.

Frequently asked questions

When is passionflower taken for sleep?

The final serving is commonly taken 30–60 minutes before bedtime.

Can it be taken during the day?

Yes, in a smaller amount for mild nervous tension if it does not cause drowsiness.

How long is it used?

Short term. If anxiety or insomnia persists for more than two weeks or worsens, seek professional assessment.
