Asian ginseng is the dried root of Panax ginseng, a member of the Araliaceae. This product records Chinese origin and roots at least six years old. Panax evokes a “panacea”, while the human-like root shape explains the Chinese name ren shen.
Characteristic compounds are ginsenosides, together with polysaccharides and polyacetylenes. As an adaptogen it is traditionally used for vitality, stamina and adjustment to physical or mental stress.
Key properties
Its principal role concerns fatigue, concentration and recovery. Studies explore glucose, immune response, sexual function and exercise, with results dependent on the extract and not automatically transferable to cut root.
Uses
Traditional and research references include:
- physical and mental vitality
- stamina, athletic performance and recovery after effort
- fatigue, exhaustion and convalescence
- chronic fatigue as a complementary area of interest
- memory, concentration and mental alertness
- mood and traditional use for low mood
- immune response and antiviral mechanisms as research areas
- glucose and type 2 diabetes with close monitoring
- low blood pressure and circulatory toning in tradition
- erectile function and male sexual wellness
- sperm count and motility in male-fertility research.
Preparation & dosage
Root decoction: use a total of 1–3 g daily. Simmer in 1–3 cups of water for 10–15 minutes and divide servings early in the day. The softened pieces may traditionally be chewed. A traditional cycle lasts 2–3 weeks and is followed by a 1–2 week break.
The quantities are indicative and based on traditional use and published herbal medicine literature. For extended use or while taking medication, consult a healthcare professional.
Combinations with other herbs
Traditionally paired with ginger or cinnamon for a warming decoction. Do not casually combine it with strong stimulants, heavy coffee intake or guarana because insomnia and palpitations may increase.
Precautions
Possible effects include insomnia, nervousness, headache, digestive upset or blood-pressure change. Take early and avoid with uncontrolled hypertension, serious heart disease, acute infection, pregnancy, breastfeeding or childhood. Seek advice with diabetes medicines, anticoagulants such as warfarin, stimulants, MAO inhibitors or immunosuppressants. Stop before surgery as medically directed.
Frequently asked questions
Is Panax ginseng the same as Siberian ginseng?
No. Panax contains ginsenosides, whereas eleuthero contains eleutherosides.
When should the decoction be taken?
Early in the day because evening use may disturb sleep.
How is a traditional cycle organised?
A traditional cycle lasts 2–3 weeks and is followed by a 1–2 week break.
