Maca is the dried hypocotyl of Lepidium meyenii, milled into raw organic powder. It comes from Peru and is selected as an adaptogenic superfood for energy, endurance and libido.
Key properties
Maca is a nutrient-dense food with plant protein, a broad amino-acid profile, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. Its characteristic constituents include macamides and macaenes, glucosinolates and polyphenols. Its adaptogenic character is described in relation to the neuroendocrine response to stress. Its adaptogenic profile is also traditionally associated with healthy energy levels and adrenal health.
Uses
Maca has a long food and tonic tradition in the Peruvian Andes. Its original product material records the following distinct uses and research areas:
- Libido and sexual wellbeing: its best-known traditional and modern use, examined in small human studies.
- Mild erectile dysfunction: a small randomised study reported changes in subjective sexual wellbeing.
- Male fertility and semen quality: clinical studies and systematic reviews have examined sperm concentration, motility and overall semen quality, with mixed conclusions.
- Energy, stamina and athletic performance: athletes and bodybuilders use maca as a food-based tonic, while the available human evidence remains limited.
- Mood, stress and anxiety: small studies and traditional use associate maca with emotional wellbeing and the stress response.
- Blood pressure: a pilot study in postmenopausal women explored possible effects on blood pressure.
- Skin and ultraviolet exposure: preclinical animal studies have examined protection from UVA, UVB and UVC damage.
- Antioxidant defence: preclinical work has explored glutathione and superoxide-dismutase pathways.
- Menopausal symptoms: limited clinical work has examined mood, discomfort and hormonal wellbeing.
- Learning and memory: this field is based mainly on preclinical research.
Preparation & dosage
Mix 1 teaspoon of maca powder into a smoothie, juice, plant drink, yoghurt or oats once or twice daily. Start with a smaller amount to assess tolerance and favour morning use if it feels stimulating.
Quantities are indicative and based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a healthcare professional.
Combinations with other herbs
Maca pairs with cacao, cinnamon and protein in smoothies. Tonic blends may combine it with suma or ginseng, with attention to the overall stimulating effect.
Precautions
Seek medical advice during pregnancy, breastfeeding, thyroid disease, hormone-sensitive conditions or hormone therapy. Sensitive people may experience insomnia, nervousness or digestive discomfort. Raw maca can feel heavier on the stomach than gelatinised maca. Discontinue if persistent symptoms develop.
