What it is

Greek organic milk thistle seeds come from Silybum marianum, the familiar herb of traditional liver and bile support. The seeds contain the flavonolignan complex known as silymarin, together with fatty oil, protein and other plant compounds.

They are grown in Greece using certified organic methods. Production and processing are covered by DIO certification, and packing uses a controlled N2–CO2 atmosphere under ISO 22000:2005.

Key properties

Hepatoprotective and restorative. Silymarin and silibinin have been studied for antioxidant mechanisms, membrane stabilisation and the liver response to toxic load.

Cholagogue and digestive. Traditional use links the seeds with bile secretion, the gallbladder and digestion of fatty foods.

Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Silymarin has been studied in oxidative stress and inflammatory pathways.

Galactagogue. European tradition associates milk thistle with support for breast-milk production.

Metabolic tonic. Glucose, insulin sensitivity and metabolic markers have been examined.

Uses

  • Liver, fatty liver and hepatitis. Milk thistle is used as complementary support in programmes for alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatic stress and recovery from medicines, alcohol or other toxins.
  • Bile, gallbladder and gallstones. Bile stimulation underlies traditional use for dyspepsia and heaviness after fatty food. Bile-duct obstruction or colic requires medical assessment.
  • Brain and ageing. Antioxidant and neuroprotective mechanisms have been examined preclinically in relation to Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and age-related cognitive decline.
  • Bones. Experimental data examine bone mineralisation, bone loss and fracture healing.
  • Breastfeeding. Traditional galactagogue use is associated with prolactin. Because breastfeeding is a sensitive period, more than a food amount should be discussed with a midwife or healthcare professional.
  • Acne and skin. The connection concerns oxidative stress and inflammatory mechanisms studied in skin conditions.
  • Blood sugar and type 2 diabetes. Silymarin studies examine insulin sensitivity and glucose lowering. Monitoring is needed with antidiabetic medicine.
  • Silymarin and silibinin have been studied in laboratory and supportive oncology contexts for cell signalling and treatment adverse effects.

Preparation & dosage

Seed decoction

Simmer ½ teaspoon of seeds in 1½ cups of water for 15–20 minutes. Strain and drink up to three times daily.

Cracked or ground seeds

Crack the seeds in a blender and simmer for 5–10 minutes. Freshly ground seeds may also be added to food. Grind shortly before use to protect the fatty fraction.

Amounts are indicative and are based on traditional use and published herbal literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a healthcare professional.

Precautions

Mild, temporary laxative action or digestive discomfort may occur. Avoid with a known Asteraceae allergy, including daisy, ragweed, chamomile or artichoke.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, oestrogen-sensitive conditions and antidiabetic medicine require professional advice. With gallstones, bile-duct obstruction, severe right-sided abdominal pain, fever or jaundice, seek medical assessment before cholagogue use.

Frequently asked questions

Should the seeds be cracked before making a decoction?

They may be used whole for 15–20 minutes or cracked for 5–10 minutes so water reaches the interior more readily.

When are they used during the day?

The decoction may be divided up to three times daily, usually before or with meals.

Why are milk thistle seeds commonly chosen?

They are mainly chosen for traditional support of the liver, bile flow and digestion of fatty foods.
