What it is

Organic Withania somnifera powder from India, one of the best-known adaptogenic herbs of Ayurveda. Chosen for stress and anxiety, sleep, physical strength and stamina, and mental performance. Its taste is bittersweet, with the sweet note dominating in digestion.

Key properties

In the Ayurvedic tradition it is classified as a rasayana, that is a rejuvenative, and described as an adaptogen, calmative and tonic. Modern research focuses on the stress axis and cortisol, as well as on the neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory direction. Its characteristic constituents are the withanolides (steroidal lactones), alkaloids, sitoindosides and flavonoids.

Uses

Who it is for

In periods of stress, anxiety and overload, with difficulty sleeping, in fatigue and exhaustion, under increased physical demands and training, and in periods when mental clarity and memory are under pressure.

Its usual uses

  • Stress, anxiety and mood. Controlled clinical studies with standardised root extract have examined stress and anxiety scales as well as cortisol levels in adults.
  • Sleep and rest. The species carries the epithet somnifera precisely because of its traditional association with sleep. It is used for difficulty falling asleep and for restless sleep.
  • Strength, stamina and muscle mass. Tradition attributes strengthening properties to it — hence the nickname "Ayurvedic ginseng". Studies have examined muscle mass, strength and recovery in training individuals.
  • Mental performance and memory. It has been studied in cognitive and psychomotor performance tests. Preclinical data concern neuronal protection and models of Alzheimer disease and memory loss.
  • Joints and inflammation. Tradition uses it for stiffness and joint discomfort, with research interest focusing on the anti-inflammatory properties of withanolides.
  • Thyroid and hormonal balance. A clinical trial in subclinical hypothyroid participants examined TSH, T3 and T4 levels. Another study concerned perimenopausal symptoms.
  • Blood sugar, cholesterol and haemoglobin. Traditional use reports a contribution to blood sugar and cholesterol levels, as well as to the stabilisation of haemoglobin.
  • Appetite, digestion and rejuvenation. As a rasayana it is used in states of debility and weakness, in an appetite-supporting role, and to support the body after prolonged strain.
  • Bone density. There is preclinical research interest in bone density parameters and in genes related to bone development.

Preparation & dosage

Powder
The product instruction is 2–8 g per day. Start at the lower end of the range and increase gradually. It dissolves in water, juice, plant milk or a warm drink with honey. In the Ayurvedic tradition it is often taken in the evening with milk when the aim is sleep, and in the morning when the aim is stamina.

Quantities are indicative, based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or if you are on medication, consult a healthcare professional.

Combinations with other herbs

In tonic blends it is traditionally combined with rhodiola, schisandra or eleuthero. In Ayurvedic blends it is accompanied by turmeric, ginger or brahmi. Quantities need adjustment by a specialist.

Precautions

Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Specialist monitoring is needed in autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Hashimoto thyroiditis and type 1 diabetes. Caution is required with thyroid medication, as it may alter thyroid hormone levels. It may lower blood sugar and blood pressure, so with antidiabetic or antihypertensive treatment doses may need adjustment by the treating physician. Mild gastrointestinal discomfort and drowsiness have been reported.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better taken in the morning or the evening?

When the aim is sleep and calm, the evening is preferred. When the aim is stamina and performance, the morning is preferred.

How much powder is used?

The product instruction is 2 to 8 grams per day, starting with the smaller quantity and increasing gradually.

Who needs to be careful?

Pregnant and breastfeeding women avoid it. In autoimmune conditions and with thyroid, blood sugar or blood pressure medication, specialist guidance is needed.
