- Microbiome and prebiotic. Inulin increases the number of good bacteria in the gut, particularly Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli.
- Pathogens and immunity. These bacteria help fend off unwanted pathogens, prevent infection and contribute to supporting immunity.
- Irritable bowel. It is considered to help in irritable bowel syndrome and in improving the condition of the intestinal tract.
- Satiety. Soluble fibre dissolves in the stomach and forms a gel-like substance that slows digestion and increases fullness.
- Cholesterol. The same gel-like substance reduces cholesterol absorption as it passes through the digestive tract.
- Blood sugar. It slows carbohydrate digestion, allowing a slow release of sugar without spikes.
- Fat metabolism. It is linked with the regulation of fat metabolism.
- Constipation. Relief from constipation is reported.
What it contains
- Inulin — soluble dietary fibre (oligosaccharide)
- Source: chicory root, one of the richest natural inulin sources
- Prebiotic: food for Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli
- Very high solubility — it does not alter the texture of the foods it is added to
- Pack 100 g
Taste & texture
Slightly sweet, otherwise neutral in character. Its sweetness is about one tenth that of sugar, so it does not noticeably sweeten but rounds off. In baking it gives a creamy texture without fat — which is why it is used in ice cream.
Where it fits
In ice cream and creams, where it replaces part of the fat. In cereal bars and bread, for fibre without a change in taste. In yoghurt alongside probiotics — prebiotic and probiotic together. In coffee, tea and smoothies.
How to use
Add to baking, ice cream and drinks, as well as yoghurt, smoothies and hot beverages. It dissolves easily in cold and hot liquid.
Start with a small amount and increase gradually over two weeks. Inulin is a strong prebiotic and an abrupt start is the most common cause of discomfort.
Precautions & storage
Inulin in large amounts or with an abrupt start often causes bloating, gas and abdominal discomfort. This is expected and settles with gradual adaptation.
In irritable bowel syndrome inulin is a FODMAP and some people do not tolerate it — try a very small amount first.
Chicory belongs to the Asteraceae family: avoid in known allergy. Store in a cool, dry place.
