Dried nettle root is the underground part of the familiar plant and is mainly chosen for traditional urinary support in men with prostate symptoms. Its earthy character suits a root decoction.
Main properties
The root contains phytosterols, lignans, polysaccharides and lectins. Tradition describes it as tonic, diuretic and astringent, while modern use focuses more specifically on urinary flow and benign prostate enlargement.
Uses
The root is traditionally selected for urinary frequency, nocturia, weak flow and incomplete emptying after symptoms have been assessed as benign prostate enlargement. The wider nettle tradition includes urinary infection, retention, oedema, uric acid, gout, osteoarthritis, allergic rhinitis and eczema. References to blood formation, anaemia, nosebleeds and other bleeding mainly concern the leaves or historical whole-plant practice.
Preparation & dosage
For a decoction, add 1.5 g root to 150 ml water, simmer for 10 minutes and strain. Take 3–4 times daily, for a total of 4.5–6 g. Use for prostate symptoms is usually measured in weeks and should be reviewed by a healthcare professional.
Quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published herbal-medicine literature. For prolonged use or if you take medication, consult a healthcare professional.
Combinations with other herbs
Men’s urinary formulas may pair it with saw palmetto or pumpkin seed. Combining root with diuretic herbs such as nettle leaf calls for adequate fluids and a review of medicines.
Precautions
Prostate symptoms require diagnosis before use to exclude a more serious cause. Blood in urine, fever, pain, urinary retention or rapid deterioration needs prompt urological review. Avoid if fluids are medically restricted. Seek advice with diuretics, blood-pressure, diabetes or prostate medicines. Avoid during pregnancy, breastfeeding and under 18 years.
Frequently asked questions
Is nettle root the same as nettle leaf?
No. Root is associated mainly with prostate symptoms, while leaf is used for urinary flushing and mild joint pain.
How much root is used daily?
Use 1.5 g per decoction, 3–4 times daily, for a total of 4.5–6 g.
Should prostate symptoms be checked first?
Yes. Urinary symptoms need assessment to exclude infection, obstruction or another serious cause.
