What it is

An aromatic herb best known for the distinctive response its scent produces in many cats. In human traditional use it is prepared as a mild evening tea for relaxation and digestive comfort.

Key properties

Nepetalactone in the essential oil is characteristic, together with flavonoids and phenolic acids. The herb is associated with gentle relaxation and sleep support and traditional relief of flatulence and digestive spasm.

Uses

Catnip is traditionally used during nervousness, temporary sleep difficulty and digestive tension. Folk references include colds, flu, cough, bronchitis and low mood, while modern human evidence remains limited.

As a warm tea it may accompany a cold chiefly for warmth, perspiration and relaxation.

Preparation & dosage

Infusion

Pour 200 ml of boiling water over 1–2 g of herb, cover for 5–10 minutes and strain. Drink once or twice daily, with the final serving in the evening.

The quantities are indicative and based on traditional use and published herbal-medicine literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a healthcare professional.

Combinations with other herbs

For relaxation it combines with lemon balm, lime flower or passionflower. For digestive comfort it pairs with peppermint or fennel.

Precautions

Avoid during pregnancy because of traditional emmenagogue use. Seek advice during breastfeeding, for children and with sedative medicines. It may cause drowsiness; do not combine with alcohol and take care when driving. High amounts may cause nausea or headache.

Frequently asked questions

Is catnip only for cats?

When is it taken?

Usually in the afternoon or evening, especially when relaxation is the aim.

Why is it avoided in pregnancy?
