What it is

The large, downy leaves of mullein make a mild tea traditionally used for dry irritating cough and throat discomfort. Their fine hairs always require very careful filtration.

Key properties

Mullein is traditionally described as expectorant, demulcent, mildly diuretic, mildly calming, anti-inflammatory, wound-healing and laxative. Mucilage provides its soothing quality, while saponins are associated with expectorant use.

Uses

Recorded uses of the herb include:

  • irritated throat
  • dry or troublesome cough
  • hoarseness
  • respiratory support in bronchitis or pneumonia

Older sources also mention bowel and urinary complaints, uric acid and gout, plus burns, itching and lichen-like eruptions. Pneumonia and severe symptoms need medical care.

Drink slowly while lukewarm after very thorough filtering. Traditional external references concern application to small intact areas. Older sources mention eye washes, but an infusion prepared at home is not sterile and fine hairs can irritate; no such use instruction is therefore provided.

Preparation & dosage

Herbal tea

Add 1.5–2 g of leaves to 200 ml boiling water, cover for 10–15 minutes and pass through a very fine filter or double layer of muslin. Drink 2–3 times daily.

The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Pairs well with

Combine with marshmallow for extra soothing, thyme for a productive cough, or liquorice only when blood-pressure and medicine contraindications have been excluded.

Choose herbs to add together with Mullein leaves.

Precautions

  • Adverse effects: Filter the infusion meticulously because leaf hairs can irritate the mouth and throat.
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding & age: Not recommended during pregnancy, breastfeeding or in children without professional advice because data are insufficient.
  • Allergies & sensitivities: Stop if allergy or worsening cough occurs.
  • Duration: Limit self-use to one week.

Frequently asked questions

Why must mullein-leaf tea be finely filtered?

Fine leaf hairs can irritate the mouth and throat, so use a very fine filter or double layer of muslin.

Which cough is mullein traditionally chosen for?

It is mainly chosen for dry irritating cough, hoarseness and a soothing feeling in the throat.

Can homemade mullein tea be used in the eyes?

No. It is not sterile, and the fine leaf hairs can cause further irritation.
