Send a message(+30) 2610 221354A cooling, strongly aromatic herb used as a tea and in cooking. Peppermint leaves are a classic choice for digestion, bloating and flatulence, with a clean menthol flavour.
Essential oil rich in menthol and menthone, together with flavonoids and rosmarinic acid, characterises the herb. Peppermint is valued for traditional digestive support and relief of bloating, flatulence and mild digestive spasms.
European traditional use of the leaves covers indigestion, bloating and flatulence, while the warm infusion suits nausea, a tendency to vomit and mild intestinal colic or spasm. Gastro-resistant peppermint-oil preparations have also been studied for irritable bowel syndrome.
Folk herbal practice also includes the leaves for colds, headache and dysmenorrhoea, and in traditional mouth rinses for gingivitis and oral care.
In cooking, peppermint flavours salads, vegetables, meat, fish, yoghurt, white cheese, fruit salads, desserts and cocktails.
Pour 100–150 ml of boiling water over 1.5–3 g of leaves, cover for 5–10 minutes and strain. Drink up to 3 times daily, preferably after meals.
The quantities are indicative and based on traditional use and published herbal-medicine literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a healthcare professional.
For bloating it combines well with fennel, anise or lemon balm. For a gentler digestive tea it may be paired with chamomile or marshmallow root.
It may worsen heartburn or gastro-oesophageal reflux. Medical advice is required in gallstones, bile-duct obstruction or serious liver disease. Do not use in children under 4; age-appropriate amounts are needed for older children. Avoid in allergy to mint or menthol.
It is commonly taken after meals when the aim is digestion, bloating and flatulence.
Dried leaves make a mild aromatic infusion; essential oil is used in different, specifically formulated preparations.
The leaves flavour salads, sauces, yoghurt, pulses, desserts and cold drinks.
