What it is

Marshmallow is a perennial plant of the mallow family, native to moist soils of Europe and the Mediterranean. Traditionally used for digestive and respiratory complaints, providing gentle relief and mucous membrane protection. Its name comes from the Greek "althaino" (to heal, soothe).

Key properties

The root is naturally rich in mucilaginous polysaccharides (up to 35%), tannins and flavonoids. Mucilages form a protective layer on mucous membranes, a property widely documented in contemporary phytotherapy literature. Marshmallow root is traditionally described as demulcent for mucous membranes, antacid, mildly laxative, tissue-healing and anti-inflammatory.

Uses

Traditionally and in modern phytotherapy, marshmallow is used for digestive mucosal irritation (gastritis, oesophagitis, gastro-oesophageal reflux (GERD), peptic ulcer and enteritis), oropharyngeal inflammation (gingivitis, periodontitis, pharyngitis and laryngitis) and dry irritating cough. External use on irritated skin is also documented.

Its uses focus on soothing and protecting the mucous membranes of the digestive and respiratory tracts. Traditional literature additionally records hiatus-hernia discomfort and cystitis. This product is root; references to the lungs and urinary tract that mainly concern the leaves remain clearly distinguished.

Preparation & dosage

Cold extract (preferred method)

2–4 g of dried root (approx. 1 teaspoon) in a cup of cold water. Leave 60–90 minutes stirring occasionally, strain and drink. 2–3 times daily, away from meals and other medications.

Decoction

2–4 g of root per cup of hot water, boil 5 minutes, strain. 2–3 times daily.

Gargle (for oropharynx)

Stronger extract (5 g in 150 ml), lukewarm, gargle 3–4 times daily.

The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Pairs well with

For digestion: liquorice, chamomile, calendula. For respiratory: mallow, thyme, oregano. Avoid combining with bitter herbs (e.g. wormwood, gentian), which act in the opposite direction on mucous membranes.

Choose herbs to add together with Marshmallow root.

Precautions

  • Drug interaction: Mucilages may reduce absorption of oral medications. Space at least 1–2 hours.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Considered among the safest herbs, but medical advice preferred for prolonged use.
  • Children: Suitable from 3 years and older, in reduced dose (half the adult dose).
  • Max self-treatment duration: Up to 4 weeks continuous use without medical supervision.

Frequently asked questions

Why is cold extract preferred over boiling?

Marshmallow mucilages dissolve better in cold water; high heat can partially break them down. Cold extract preserves maximum mucosal protection.

How quickly does it work?

For pharyngeal or oesophageal irritation, soothing sensation appears within minutes. For chronic digestive conditions, 2–3 weeks of regular use are needed.

What is the difference between root and leaf?

The root has the highest mucilage content (up to 35%) and is best for digestive and oropharyngeal use. Leaves and flowers have lower content and are used more for respiratory support.
