What it is

Linden is an aromatic blend of lime-tree flowers and leaves with a sweet, honeyed fragrance. One of Europe’s most familiar evening herbal teas, it is chosen for relaxation, gentle support during a cold and more comfortable digestion.

Main properties

Linden contains mucilage, flavonoids and aromatic compounds. Traditional practice describes it as relaxing, nervine, antispasmodic and diaphoretic, with a mildly astringent, diuretic and soothing character for the throat and digestive tract.

Uses

A warm infusion suits:

  • colds
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • a feverish feeling

where warmth and mucilage bring gentle comfort. It is also enjoyed in the evening for tension, anxiety, insomnia, premenstrual tension and menstrual discomfort.

Its aromatic and antispasmodic tradition links it with indigestion, bloating and stomach discomfort. Older references include arteriosclerosis, hypertension, angina and varicose veins, often in blends with hawthorn or mistletoe. These cardiovascular references are retained as historical herbal context.

Preparation & dosage

Add 1–2 g to 150–250 ml boiling water, cover for 5–10 minutes and strain. Drink 2–4 times daily, for a total of about 2.5–5 g per day. For an evening cup, use one serving 30–60 minutes before bedtime.

Quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published herbal-medicine literature. For prolonged use or if you take medication, consult a healthcare professional.

Combinations with other herbs

For relaxation, pair with lemon balm or chamomile. For a seasonal cold-weather tea, combine with elderflower. Cardiovascular blends with hawthorn or mistletoe require professional guidance.

Precautions

Avoid if allergic to linden. Seek advice for serious heart disease, persistent hypertension, angina, or use of diuretic or sedating medicines. Persistent fever, shortness of breath or a cough lasting more than a few days requires assessment. Safety during pregnancy, breastfeeding and very early childhood is not sufficiently documented.

Frequently asked questions

Does this herb contain only flowers?

No. This particular commercial herb contains flowers together with leaves.

When is linden best enjoyed?

It can be taken during the day, while a serving 30–60 minutes before bedtime suits evening relaxation.

What needs attention with high blood pressure?

Linden’s link with blood pressure is traditional. Hypertension requires monitoring and a review of current medicines.
