What it is

Pau d’Arco or Lapacho is the inner bark of South American Handroanthus trees. Indigenous traditions used the bitter decoction for infections, wounds, lupus, fever, dysentery, inflammation, pain, arthritis, prostate complaints, ulcers and tumours.

Key properties

Traditional practice describes the inner bark as antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, diaphoretic and tonic. Modern laboratory and preclinical studies of extracts, lapachol and beta-lapachone have shown antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antiproliferative activity, including in cancer models.

Uses

Recorded uses of the herb include:

  • Candida and candidiasis
  • fungal complaints
  • infection
  • herpes
  • inflammation
  • arthritic pain
  • boils
  • ulcers
  • fever
  • dysentery
  • prostate complaints

Traditional and commercial references also include the terms detoxification, immune support, weight loss, blood glucose and selenium, without presenting them as clinically established outcomes.

It has an earthy, bitter flavour and is used in small portions through the day. Quality depends on correct species identification and use of inner bark. Older sources mention external use, but no vaginal-douching instruction is given because a non-sterile decoction may irritate and disturb normal flora.

Preparation & dosage

Traditional mild bark decoction

Add 2 teaspoons of bark to 1 litre of water. Simmer for 20 minutes, remove from the heat and leave covered for about 1 hour. Strain and divide into small portions through the day. This preparation concerns cut inner bark.

The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Combinations with other herbs

Cinnamon or ginger can soften the flavour. Avoid combining it with ginkgo, garlic, willow or other herbs that may increase bleeding risk.

Precautions

  • Adverse effects: High amounts may cause nausea, diarrhoea and dizziness.
  • Medication: It may slow clotting; avoid with anticoagulants or antiplatelets, in bleeding disorders and for at least 2 weeks before surgery.
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding & age: Contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding and not recommended in children.
  • Duration: Safety of prolonged use is not established.

Frequently asked questions

What does Pau d’Arco taste like?

Earthy and bitter; divide the decoction into small daily servings.

Why is Lapacho bark simmered?

The hard inner bark needs 20 minutes of gentle simmering.

Which medicines require particular care?

Avoid it with anticoagulant or antiplatelet medicines because it affects clotting.
