Contemporary herbal literature recognises traditional use to increase urine flow in minor urinary complaints and to support healing of small superficial wounds. Older literature calls it urinary astringent, haemostatic and anti-inflammatory. Its silica content explains interest in connective tissue, bones, calcium absorption, wounds, fractures, osteoporosis and arterial lipid deposition, although these are not official indications for the tea.
Traditionally, horsetail has been used for:
Older sources mention childhood bedwetting, but this is not a paediatric recommendation.
Use is accompanied by adequate water to support a gentle flushing effect. It does not replace assessment for fever, pain, difficult urination or blood in the urine. Externally it may be used on a small, clean superficial wound.
Use 1–4 g in 150 ml boiling water as an infusion or gentle 5–15 minute decoction, 3–4 times daily. Total daily herb is 3–12 g and adequate fluid intake is required.
Gently simmer 10 g in 1 litre of water for 10–15 minutes, allow to cool and apply with a clean dressing.
The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
For urinary use it is traditionally combined with couch grass or nettle leaf. Calendula may complement an external dressing for a clean superficial injury.
It is used as a mild diuretic to flush the urinary tract and should be accompanied by adequate water intake.
Traditional courses last 2–4 weeks; use for up to 6 weeks only with professional supervision.
Do not use it when fluid restriction has been advised because of serious heart or kidney disease.
