What it is

Horse-chestnut bark is a different raw material from the seed. Tradition links the bark with heavy legs, mild venous discomfort and haemorrhoids.

Key properties

Traditional literature describes the bark as anti-inflammatory, analgesic, circulatory tonic and supportive of vessel walls. Contemporary phytotherapy literature for the bark records traditional use for minor venous-circulation complaints and haemorrhoidal symptoms. Bark aesculin must not be confused with aescin, a characteristic constituent of the seed.

Uses

Recorded uses of the herb include:

  • chronic venous insufficiency
  • phlebitis
  • varicose veins
  • heavy or tired legs
  • oedema
  • haemorrhoids
  • sprains
  • wounds

Older sources also mention prostate enlargement and hypotension, but these are not principal bark uses.

Thrombophlebitis, sudden one-sided swelling, marked pain, warmth or colour change in a leg requires prompt medical assessment. Dosages for tinctures or seed extracts do not apply to the dried bark sold here.

Preparation & dosage

Form-specific dosage

Published phytotherapy guidance lists 550 mg of powdered bark 2–3 times daily for adults. Because this product is sold as bark rather than confirmed uniform powder, do not improvise an equivalent decoction; use requires professional guidance for the particular cut and batch.

The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Pairs well with

For mild venous comfort it is traditionally combined with butcher's broom or red-vine leaf after interactions are excluded. Do not combine with other horse-chestnut products without accounting for total exposure.

Choose herbs to add together with Horse-chestnut bark.

Precautions

  • Age restriction: For adults only.
  • Medication & medical conditions: Avoid during pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver or kidney disease and with anticoagulants or antiplatelets without medical advice.
  • Precaution: Stomach upset may occur.
  • When to seek advice: Persistent haemorrhoidal bleeding or symptoms require assessment.
  • Precaution: Bark safety is assessed separately, and doses for seed preparations do not apply to it.

Frequently asked questions

Is horse-chestnut bark the same as the seed?

It is a different herbal material, and doses for seed preparations do not apply to the bark.

Can I improvise a decoction from the bark?

This is not advised: current European herbal literature describes powdered bark, while the actual cut and batch require professional guidance.

Which leg symptoms need urgent assessment?

Sudden one-sided swelling, severe pain, heat or colour change needs urgent medical assessment.
