Helichrysum consists of the dried yellow flower heads of Mediterranean Helichrysum stoechas. Its name joins the Greek words for sun and gold, while the flowers retain colour and shape after drying, explaining names such as everlasting and immortelle.
In the myth, Helen of Troy asks Paris whether she is beautiful and he offers helichrysum as a symbol of Aphrodite. This cultural story accompanies but does not prove herbal uses.
Key properties
The flowers contain flavonoids, phenolic acids and aromatic compounds. Tradition describes antioxidant, antimicrobial, antispasmodic, expectorant, diuretic and soothing roles. Evidence for essential oil or other Helichrysum species does not transfer automatically to a simple infusion of these flower heads.
Uses
Traditional uses include:
- digestion, bloating, spasms and discomfort after food
- muscular discomfort, headache, migraine and rheumatic complaints in tradition
- circulation, heaviness and traditional bruise care
- skin, acne, scars, abrasions, irritation and dermatitis in mild external washes
- liver, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen and pancreas in traditional “cleansing” language
- bronchitis, cough, asthma and whooping cough as historical respiratory references
- psoriasis, burns, allergies and fungal or microbial conditions as issues needing medical diagnosis
- antioxidant and inflammatory responses in laboratory research
- aromatherapy and energetic tradition for emotional release and resilience.
Preparation & dosage
Infusion: place 1 teaspoon flowers in a cup of hot water, cover for about 10 minutes and strain. Up to 2–3 cups may be used daily. External wash: cool the infusion and use on a small intact area after patch testing. Do not apply to a deep burn, infected site or open wound.
The quantities are indicative and based on traditional use and published herbal medicine literature. For extended use or while taking medication, consult a healthcare professional.
Combinations with other herbs
For digestion it pairs with chamomile or fennel; for gentle respiratory use, with thyme or mallow. Keep blends simple so a possible allergy can be identified.
Precautions
Avoid with allergy to Asteraceae. Seek advice in pregnancy, breastfeeding, childhood, bile-duct obstruction, gallstones, serious liver or kidney disease and anticoagulant use. Possible effects on bile and urine flow may affect treatment. Essential oil is a different concentrated product and must not be swallowed or used neat. Persistent cough, breathlessness, fever or skin infection requires medical assessment.
Frequently asked questions

Its golden-yellow flower heads retain their colour and shape after drying.
How is the infusion prepared?
Cover one teaspoon flowers in a cup of hot water for about 10 minutes, then strain.
Is the infusion the same as essential oil?
No. Essential oil is far more concentrated and follows different safety rules.
