What it is

Gymnema (Gymnema sylvestre) is one of the best-known herbs of Ayurveda, with centuries of use for blood sugar regulation and reducing sweet cravings. The powdered extract with 25% gymnemic acid offers concentrated action and is an ideal choice for anyone wanting substantive support for metabolism and dietary balance.

Key properties

Blood-sugar regulating, sweet-taste suppressing, pancreas-supporting, antioxidant. Gymnemic acid is the main active component: a 25% content ensures strong and consistent action even in a smaller amount. A characteristic of gymnema is that, on contact with the tongue, it temporarily suppresses the perception of sweetness — hence its Indian name "gurmar", meaning "sugar destroyer".

Uses

Who it is for

For people with raised blood sugar seeking dietary support, for insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome; for diets aimed at weight loss; for people with a high intake of sweets and strong sugar cravings; for support of the lipid profile and cholesterol.

Common uses

Taken in water, juice, a smoothie or alongside other supplements, ideally before meals containing carbohydrates. Timing matters: its effect on the absorption of sugars from the gut coincides with digestion of the meal.

Key benefits attributed to it

  • Contributes to blood sugar regulation. The primary and most studied use of the herb.
  • Reduces sweet cravings. Through temporary suppression of the perception of sweetness.
  • Supports metabolism and weight management. A systematic review of double-blind randomised clinical trials has examined plant extracts with appetite-suppressing properties.
  • Contributes to improved insulin sensitivity. A central mechanism for metabolic syndrome.
  • Helps reduce absorption of sugars from the gut. Gymnemic acid competes with glucose at intestinal receptors.
  • Supports healthy pancreatic function. Preclinical research has examined the possible regeneration of the islets of Langerhans in experimental models.
  • Contributes to control of lipids such as cholesterol. A parallel metabolic action.
  • Has antioxidant action. Attributed to its saponins and flavonoids.

Herbal combinations

For blood sugar regulation, traditionally with cinnamon and barberry. For appetite control with garcinia and green tea. In Ayurvedic tradition it is combined with fenugreek for metabolic support.

Preparation and dosage

Powdered extract

Take a very small amount — the tip of a spoon, 200 to 400 mg per day, in 1–2 doses daily, before food. It dissolves in water, juice or a smoothie, or is taken alongside other supplements.

When to take it

Ideally before meals containing carbohydrates, so that its effect on sugar absorption coincides with digestion.

Duration

Cycles of 8–12 weeks with a 2-week break. For anyone under glucose monitoring, assessment is done together with the treating physician.

The amounts given are indicative, based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or if you are on medication, consult a qualified health professional.

Precautions

Not to be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. People with diabetes mellitus on medication should consult their doctor: gymnema may enhance the effect of antidiabetic drugs and insulin and cause hypoglycaemia, so a dose adjustment under medical supervision may be needed. Avoid for at least 2 weeks before surgery, given its effect on glucose levels. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Not given to children and adolescents without medical direction. Medical advice is required in hepatic or renal insufficiency. Gymnema is dietary support and does not replace diabetes medication. Mild gastrointestinal discomfort has rarely been reported.

Frequently asked questions

What does 25% gymnemic acid mean?

It means the extract is standardised so that 25% of its weight is gymnemic acid, the main active component. Standardisation ensures strong and consistent action even in a smaller amount.

How much and when do I take it?

A very small amount — the tip of a spoon, 200 to 400 mg per day — in 1 to 2 doses daily, before food. Ideally before meals containing carbohydrates.

Can I take it if I am on diabetes medication?

Only after consulting your doctor. Gymnema enhances the effect of antidiabetic drugs and insulin, so there is a risk of hypoglycaemia and a dose adjustment under medical supervision may be needed.
