What it is

Guarana (Paullinia cupana) is a Brazilian climbing plant from the Amazon basin, admired for its fruit. A ripe guarana fruit is roughly the size of a coffee berry and resembles a human eye. Amazonian peoples have used it for centuries. It is one of the densest natural sources of caffeine and is used as a stimulating drink in place of coffee.

Key properties

Stimulant, revitalising, antioxidant, anti-ageing. It contains an impressive range of stimulants — caffeine, theophylline and theobromine — as well as antioxidants such as tannins, saponins and catechins. The tannins slow caffeine absorption, so the lift is more gradual and longer-lasting than that of coffee.

Uses

Who it is for

For mental and physical fatigue, reduced focus and mental clarity, learning capacity; for appetite control and weight loss programmes; for physical wellbeing and sports activity. Regular use without excess is regarded as a useful strategy for mental fatigue caused by stress.

Common uses

As an infusion or decoction from the broken dried seed, or ground into breakfast, a drink, juice or water. Many choose it as an alternative to coffee because its action builds gradually and lasts longer.

Key benefits attributed to it

  • Rich in antioxidants. Tannins, saponins and catechins, with a profile comparable to green tea.
  • Reduces fatigue and improves focus. A double-blind, placebo-controlled multi-dose evaluation has examined its acute behavioural effects in humans.
  • Supports learning capacity. A study of a multivitamin and mineral supplement with added guarana documented improved cognitive performance and reduced mental fatigue.
  • Supports weight loss. Studies in adipogenesis models have examined the modulatory effect of guarana.
  • Chronic diarrhoea and constipation. The tannins have an astringent action in the gut, while the stimulant component relates to motility — traditional use runs in both directions.
  • Supports heart health. Research into the nature of anti-platelet aggregatory factors in the seeds has documented inhibition of platelet aggregation. An epidemiological study in an elderly Amazonian population examined habitual guarana intake in relation to metabolic morbidities.
  • Provides pain relief. A traditional use, linked to the action of caffeine as an analgesic adjuvant.
  • Improves skin appearance. A study of a face-care formulation with creatine, guarana and glycerol linked dermal penetration with antiwrinkle and antisagging efficacy.
  • A preclinical mouse study examined guarana in a model of melanoma lung metastases, without providing clinical conclusions.
  • Antibacterial properties. Attributed to the tannins and catechins.
  • Age-related eye disorders. The antioxidant component is studied in relation to retinal protection.

Herbal combinations

As a tonic drink, traditionally with yerba mate and cacao. For cognitive focus with ginkgo biloba and rhodiola. In weight-management routines with green tea and garcinia.

Preparation and dosage

Seed as infusion or decoction

Add half a teaspoon (1–2 g) of broken dried seed to a cup of boiling water and simmer for 5–10 minutes.

Ground seed as powder

Alternatively use the ground seed at breakfast, in a drink, or dissolved in juice or water.

Amount

Guarana has no officially established dose. Most human research has found that doses as low as 50–75 mg can deliver the benefits associated with guarana. The seed contains 2–6% caffeine — so 1 g of seed yields roughly 20–60 mg of caffeine. Total daily caffeine from all sources should stay below 400 mg for healthy adults.

When to take it

Morning or early in the day. Taking it after early afternoon may affect sleep, since the action is prolonged.

The amounts given are indicative, based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or if you are on medication, consult a qualified health professional.

Precautions

Guarana seed contains 2–6% caffeine, considerably more than a coffee bean. The compound once called "guaranine" is chemically identical to caffeine; the slower absorption is due to the tannins in the seed and does not negate the effects of caffeine. It should be avoided, or the dose minimised, by people with heart conditions and arrhythmias, hypertension, peptic ulcer, anxiety disorders and kidney damage, and during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Not given to children and adolescents. It potentiates other stimulants and may interact with anticoagulants, theophylline, lithium, ephedrine and certain antidepressants (MAOIs). Abrupt discontinuation after prolonged use may cause headache and irritability.

Frequently asked questions

How much caffeine does guarana contain?

The seed contains 2–6% caffeine, more than a coffee bean. One gram of seed yields roughly 20–60 mg of caffeine. Count it toward your daily total, which for healthy adults should stay below 400 mg.

Why does its effect last longer than coffee?

Because the tannins in the seed slow caffeine absorption. The lift builds gradually and lasts longer, instead of the sharp peak of coffee.

How do I prepare it as a drink?

Half a teaspoon (1–2 g) of broken dried seed in a cup of boiling water, simmered for 5–10 minutes. Alternatively, the ground seed dissolves into juice, water or a breakfast drink.
