What it is

A warming, pungent rhizome widely used as a spice and herb. Ginger suits culinary use, digestive comfort, nausea and a cold feeling.

Key properties

Gingerols and shogaols, together with volatile oil, are characteristic constituents. Ginger is valued for relief of nausea and mild spasmodic digestive complaints and for warming aromatic digestive support.

Uses

The updated European monograph covers use for indigestion, bloating and flatulence and for symptoms of motion sickness and vertigo. Traditional and clinical references also include morning sickness and nausea or vomiting after surgery or chemotherapy.

Clinical and preclinical research has examined ginger preparations in relation to osteoarthritis, headache and migraine, inflammatory mechanisms, immune response and circulation. Older combination-herbal records also mention epilepsy.

In cooking, ginger flavours desserts, marinades, vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, soups, rice, drinks and beverages such as ginger beer.

Preparation & dosage

Powdered drink

Stir 0.25–1 g of powder into hot water. For mild spasmodic digestive complaints it may be used up to 3 times daily.

Motion sickness

For adults and adolescents from 12 years, use 0.5 g about 30 minutes before travel. If needed, repeat every 4 hours, with a maximum daily amount of 1.5 g for this purpose.

The quantities are indicative and based on traditional use and published herbal-medicine literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a healthcare professional.

Combinations with other herbs

For digestion it combines with peppermint, fennel or cardamom. For a warming winter drink it pairs with cinnamon, lemon or turmeric.

Precautions

It may cause heartburn, gastric irritation or diarrhoea. Advice is needed with gallstones, severe reflux, anticoagulant or antiplatelet medicines, and before surgery. During pregnancy use only after professional assessment and in a limited amount. The motion-sickness dosage above is not for children under 12.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ginger granules and ground ginger?

Granules have larger particles and suit infusion, while powder mixes more easily into drinks and food.

When is it taken for travel?

About 30 minutes before departure, following the dosage for adults and adolescents from 12 years.

Can it be used daily in food?

Yes, in small culinary amounts if it does not cause heartburn or other discomfort.
