What it is

Greek organic spirulina is 100% pure dried biomass of the cyanobacterium Arthrospira, usually A. platensis, cultivated in Nigrita, Serres as a food and everyday dietary supplement. It is one of the world’s most popular natural supplements, offering high nutrient density and a protein-rich, nutritive, restorative and antioxidant character.

It stands out for its high protein content—up to about 70% of dry mass—and its broad range of constituents: phycocyanin, chlorophyll, beta-carotene and other carotenoids, B-group vitamins, vitamin E, iron, magnesium, zinc, gamma-linolenic acid and sulphated polysaccharides. This rich composition makes it especially popular for everyday vitality, energy and stamina, demanding periods, exercise and nutritional enrichment. According to the product information, it contains no iodine.

Key properties

Nutritive and protein-rich. Dry biomass has a high protein percentage, but a small daily serving does not replace main protein foods.

Antioxidant. Phycocyanin, carotenoids and chlorophyll are associated with antioxidant and inflammatory markers.

Restorative. Used as a concentrated food during fatigue or increased nutritional demand.

Lipid-modulating and metabolic. Meta-analyses have examined lipids, glucose and blood pressure using different amounts and durations.

Immunomodulatory. Phycocyanin and polysaccharides have been studied for immune markers, requiring caution in autoimmune conditions.

Uses

Uses concern a food rather than an herbal drug. Nutritional value, clinical studies and sports practices are separated by amount.

  • Nutritional enrichment and fatigue. Added to water, juice or smoothies as a source of pigments, protein and micronutrients. A small serving complements the diet.
  • Cholesterol and triglycerides. Systematic reviews have examined total and LDL cholesterol, HDL and triglycerides, with heterogeneity across studies.
  • Blood sugar and pressure. Clinical studies have evaluated fasting glucose, HbA1c and blood pressure. Monitoring is required when related medicines are used.
  • Allergic rhinitis. Small trials have examined nasal discharge, sneezing and congestion without generalisation to severe allergy.
  • Sports performance. Studies have used varying amounts for oxidative stress, endurance and recovery. High sports amounts are not everyday guidance for the general public.
  • Anaemia and micronutrients. Small studies have examined blood markers, but spirulina does not replace diagnosis, iron or a reliable B12 supplement when deficiency exists.
  • Immune research. Polysaccharides and phycocyanin have been examined in immune and antiviral mechanisms, mainly in laboratory work.

Preparation & dosage

For adults, begin with 1 g daily and commonly use 2–4 g per day in water, juice, a smoothie or cold food. Avoid very hot liquid and reseal the pack tightly.

Amounts up to 30 g reported in sports or special research settings are not home-use guidance for the general public. For children, pregnancy, breastfeeding or a special nutritional need, the amount should be set professionally.

Amounts are indicative and are based on traditional use and published herbal literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a healthcare professional.

Precautions

Use only spirulina with documented testing for microcystins, heavy metals and microbial contamination. Rancid odour, moisture or unusual deterioration is a reason to discard it.

Avoid in phenylketonuria because of phenylalanine. Seek advice with autoimmune disease, immunosuppressants, anticoagulants, antidiabetic or antihypertensive medicines and in serious liver or kidney disease. It may cause nausea, headache, diarrhoea or an allergic reaction.

Frequently asked questions

Is spirulina an herb or an alga?

It is a cyanobacterium cultivated as food, not an herbal drug or a true alga.

How much spirulina is used daily?

For adults, a common food amount is 2–4 g daily, beginning with 1 g.

Does it provide reliable vitamin B12?

Not for correcting deficiency because much of its cobalamin consists of inactive analogues.
