Characteristic constituents include the triterpenoid saponins asiaticoside and madecassoside, studied in relation to collagen, skin and microcirculation.
European herbal literature recognises traditional external use for the healing of minor wounds. Asian and Ayurvedic practice links gotu kola with memory and concentration, anxiety, venous and lymphatic circulation, and skin care for psoriasis, minor burns and scars. Clinical and preclinical research has examined centella in relation to depression, cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease; these findings do not establish a treatment indication.
Traditional literature amount: 0.6 g dried herb in 150–250 ml water, up to 3–4 times daily.
For minor superficial applications, a suitable finished gotu kola product is preferred.
Amounts are indicative and based on traditional use and published herbal literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
