What it is

Essiac is one of the best-known herbal formulas of the twentieth century. It was developed in 1922 by the Canadian nurse Rene Caisse — the name 'Essiac' is her surname spelled backwards.

The story, as it was recorded: Caisse noticed scar tissue on the breast of an elderly English patient. The woman told her that years earlier she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, but had not wanted to risk surgery and could not afford it; instead she had been given an old formula by a healer of the Ojibwa people. Thirty years later she was still alive, and passed the recipe on to nurse Caisse, who then used it widely.

This historical account is given as history, not as a claim. Despite its long reputation, Essiac has not shown activity against cancer in controlled clinical studies, and it is not intended to diagnose, treat or prevent any disease.

What has kept Essiac alive to this day is its character as a detoxifying blend for the liver and the lymphatic system, built on four herbs the Western herbal tradition has used for centuries.

Ingredients

Burdock root (Arctium lappa) — a classic herb of the Western tradition for the lymph and the skin, with a mild diuretic character.

Slippery elm inner bark (Ulmus fulva) — a mucilaginous bark, traditionally soothing to the digestive lining.

Sheep sorrel (Rumex acetosella) — traditionally associated with the skin and with cleansing.

Indian rhubarb root (Rheum palmatum) — with a characteristic laxative action in larger amounts; here it is present in a small proportion.

How to use

Preparation. Mix the ingredients well and store them in a glass jar in a dark, dry cupboard. Use a ratio of 30g of the herb blend per 1 litre of water, and weigh out the amount you want to make.

Bring the water to the boil, lower the heat, add the herbs and simmer for 10 minutes. Turn off the heat, cover and leave overnight (about 12 hours). In the morning warm it gently without boiling, let it settle for a few minutes, strain and transfer to a warm sterilised glass bottle. Once prepared, keep it refrigerated.

Taking it. One small wine glass of the prepared infusion, diluted in half a cup of warm water, once a day.

The recipe and quantities are reproduced as they circulate in the Essiac tradition. They are not manufacturer's instructions nor medical advice.

Precautions

Not a substitute for medical care. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat or prevent any disease. If you are under medical supervision or taking treatment for any condition, do not stop it, and discuss the use of this blend with your treating doctor — particularly during oncology treatment, where interactions are possible.

Rhubarb and sheep sorrel. Rhubarb contains anthraquinones with a laxative action and is not suitable in intestinal obstruction, inflammatory bowel disease or abdominal pain of unknown cause. Both herbs contain oxalates: they are not suitable where there is a history of kidney stones or renal impairment, nor for prolonged use.

What to expect. The infusion may have a laxative effect and increase urinary frequency. Headaches, swollen glands, skin redness and flu-like symptoms have also been reported. If symptoms are marked or persist, discontinue use.

Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, nor for children.

Store in a cool, dark place, out of reach of children.
