What it is

Elm bark is a herbal substance from a species in the genus Ulmus. It is selected for its gentle soothing character and the long place of elm in European herbal tradition.

Key properties

Elm barks contain polysaccharides, tannins and phenolic compounds. Herbal literature associates them with demulcent, astringent and antioxidant qualities, especially in preparations intended for mucosal comfort.

Uses

Elm bark has traditionally been valued for digestive soothing, sensations of irritation in the stomach and intestine, and gentle astringent support. Its mucilaginous constituents account for the soft texture of water-based preparations.

Elm is one of the 4 ingredients in the famous herbal blend Essiac Tea.

Preparation & dosage

Elm bark is traditionally prepared as a decoction or used as an ingredient in a defined formula. When included in a blend such as Essiac, follow the proportions and directions of that specific recipe.

Precautions

Because of its mucilaginous texture, separate it from medicines and supplements by at least 2 hours so their absorption is not delayed. Seek qualified guidance during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with persistent digestive symptoms, or when using medication.
