What it is

Dandelion root is the earthy, gently bitter part of the plant, chosen when the aim is a digestive and tonic decoction. Its natural bitterness works especially well around meals and distinguishes it from the greener, more diuretic leaves.

Main properties

The root contains inulin, bitter lactones, phenolic acids and triterpenes. Traditional herbal practice describes it as a bitter tonic, cholagogue, mild diuretic and gentle laxative, with an affinity for digestion, liver and bile function and normal fluid elimination.

Uses

Dandelion-root decoction is traditionally used for heaviness after food, slow digestion, reduced appetite and mild constipation. Its cholagogue tradition explains historical links with liver or gallbladder congestion and inflammation, cholesterol, congestive jaundice and detoxification. These terms describe historical use and are not directions for self-treating serious disease.

The broader dandelion tradition also includes water retention, oedema, lymphatic flow, cellulite and muscular or rheumatic discomfort. The root is selected for its digestive, bitter profile, while the leaves are usually preferred for stronger urinary-flushing use. Research also examines possible effects on lipids and metabolism.

Preparation & dosage

For a decoction, add 3–5 g root to 150–250 ml water, simmer for 10 minutes and strain. Take 2–3 times daily, before or after food according to tolerance. The resulting daily amount is 6–15 g, together with adequate fluid intake.

Quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published herbal-medicine literature. For prolonged use or if you take medication, consult a healthcare professional.

Combinations with other herbs

For digestion, combine with artichoke, milk thistle or ginger. For a gentler fluid-elimination blend, it can be paired with nettle leaf when there is no medical need to restrict fluids.

Precautions

Do not use without medical guidance in bile-duct obstruction, cholangitis, liver disease, active peptic ulcer or known gallstones. Pancreatitis, jaundice or severe right-sided abdominal pain require prompt assessment, not self-treatment. Avoid if allergic to Asteraceae plants. Seek advice if taking diuretics, diabetes medicines, lithium or multiple medicines, and during pregnancy, breastfeeding or under 12 years of age.

Frequently asked questions

How does dandelion root differ from the leaf?

The root has a more bitter, digestive and tonic profile, while the leaf is more often selected for urinary flushing.

How do I prepare dandelion root?

Use a decoction: simmer 3–5 g in water for about 10 minutes, then strain.

Can I use it if I have gallstones?

Not without medical guidance. Its bitter, cholagogue action calls for care in disorders of the bile ducts.
