Dried dandelion leaves make a green, pleasantly bitter infusion for those seeking traditional urinary flushing and fluid elimination. The leafy, diuretic profile of dandelion comes first here.
Main properties
The leaves provide flavonoids, phenolic acids, potassium and bitter constituents. They are traditionally described as diuretic, cholagogue, tonic and mildly antirheumatic, with an affinity for normal urinary and digestive function.
Uses
The leaf infusion is used mainly for mild water retention, a feeling of puffiness and support of urinary flow. The broader dandelion tradition includes oedema, lymphatic flow, cellulite, detoxification, cholesterol, muscular rheumatism and constipation. Leaves fit the fluid-elimination side of that tradition, while the root fits the bitter digestive side.
Older references to liver or gallbladder congestion and inflammation, gallstones, jaundice and the pancreas remain part of the whole-plant tradition. Pancreatitis and obstructive disorders are not a field for home herbal self-care.
Preparation & dosage
For an infusion, add 4–10 g leaves to 150–250 ml boiling water, cover for 10 minutes and strain. Use up to 3 times daily for 2–4 weeks, together with plenty of water. The daily amount is 12–30 g, so weigh the herb rather than estimating with heaped spoons.
Quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published herbal-medicine literature. For prolonged use or if you take medication, consult a healthcare professional.
Combinations with other herbs
For a gentle urinary-flushing tea, combine with nettle leaf or birch leaf. Peppermint or lemon verbena can round out the flavour.
Precautions
Not suitable when fluid intake has been medically restricted because of serious heart or kidney disease. Avoid in bile-duct obstruction, active peptic ulcer or Asteraceae allergy. Seek advice if using diuretics, lithium, diabetes medicines or multiple medicines. Jaundice, painful gallstones or pancreatitis require medical care. Safety data are insufficient during pregnancy, breastfeeding and under 12 years of age.
Frequently asked questions
Are dandelion leaves the same as the root?
No. The leaves have a stronger leafy, urinary-flushing profile, while the root is more bitter and digestive.
Should I drink water with the infusion?
Yes. Traditional flushing use depends on adequate fluid intake unless your doctor has advised otherwise.
How should I measure the leaves?
Use a precision scale. Loose leaves vary too much in density for reliable 4–10 g portions by spoon.
