It contains flavonoids, terpenoids and aromatic phenolic compounds. Tradition focuses on support for libido and sexual wellbeing, gentle mood and nervous-system toning, and urinary and mildly laxative applications.
Older sources linked some constituents with androgenic or testosterone-like mechanisms; modern research is examining this at a preliminary level.
Damiana is traditionally used as an aphrodisiac and nervous-system tonic, especially when reduced desire accompanies fatigue or stress. Erectile dysfunction and depression appear in traditional and research literature, with limited human data for the leaves.
It is also recorded as a bladder tonic and urinary antiseptic, and as a mild digestive and laxative herb.
Pour 200 ml of boiling water over 1–2 g of leaves, cover for 10 minutes and strain. Drink once or twice daily for a short period.
The quantities are indicative and based on traditional use and published herbal-medicine literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a healthcare professional.
For nervous tension it combines with lemon balm or passionflower. In traditional libido blends it is paired with maca or ginseng after checking interactions.
Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Because preclinical data suggest a possible glucose-lowering direction, diabetes or antidiabetic therapy requires monitoring for additive hypoglycaemic effects. Stop before surgery. High amounts may cause diarrhoea, insomnia or nervousness.
Mainly for its traditional association with libido, sexual wellbeing, mood and tonic use.
Usually in the morning or early afternoon because some people may find it stimulating.
The possible effect is toward lower glucose, so monitoring is needed with insulin or antidiabetic medicines.
