What it is

An emblematic aromatic herb of Crete with a warm oregano-like fragrance. It is used as tea for cough associated with a cold and for mild stomach and intestinal discomfort.

Key properties

Traditional literature describes it as antispasmodic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, haemostatic, antiseptic, tonic and digestive. Contemporary herbal literature records traditional use for cough associated with a cold, mild gastrointestinal disorders and externally for minor skin inflammation and bruises.

Uses

Recorded uses of the herb include:

  • stomach or intestinal discomfort and spasms
  • colic
  • mild indigestion
  • colds
  • flu
  • cough
  • nervous headache

Cretan tradition also records it as a tonic and aphrodisiac linked with libido; older Cretan sources also mention toothache and ulcer, without this constituting modern self-care guidance.

It is used warm after food or during a cold. For a minor bruise or mild irritation, cooled tea may be applied with a clean dressing to intact skin. Its flavour is strong, so a small amount is usually sufficient.

Preparation & dosage

Herbal tea

For a mild household serving use 1.5–2 g in 150 ml boiling water, cover for 2–4 minutes and strain. Take up to 3 times daily. Published phytotherapy guidance lists a 1.5–7 g single-dose range, while the lower end is preferred for a mild tea.

External use

For a dressing use 30–75 g per litre of water, 2–5 times daily, only on a small area of intact skin.

The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Pairs well with

For digestion it combines with sage or spearmint, and for a cold with thyme. Keep blends mild so its distinctive aroma remains balanced.

Choose herbs to add together with Cretan dittany herb.

Precautions

  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding & age: Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding; oral use is not recommended under 18 years.
  • Allergies & sensitivities: Do not use with Lamiaceae allergy.
  • Duration & professional advice: Seek assessment if cough lasts over 1 week or is accompanied by breathlessness, high fever or purulent sputum.
  • Duration: The self-use limit for digestive or external applications is 2 weeks.
