The rhizome is naturally rich in mucilaginous polysaccharides (triticin), saponins, flavonoids and essential oil. Mucilages soothe urinary tract mucous membranes; the essential oil has mild antimicrobial action. Couch grass is traditionally described as a diuretic and demulcent for the urinary tract.
In traditional European phytotherapy, couch grass is recorded for:
and as a mild diuretic for fluid retention.
Traditional use focuses on flushing and soothing the urinary tract mucous membranes and supporting natural diuresis.
Prepare 3–6 g of dried rhizome in 250 ml boiling water as an infusion or decoction. Drink 2–4 times daily.
Maintain adequate fluid intake during use.
The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
For urinary infections: with uva ursi, Java tea, cranberry, lemon balm. For prostate: with nettle root, saw palmetto, horse chestnut.
Yes, the same plant. Dogs and cats instinctively seek it when they have digestive discomfort — hence the traditional name "dog grass".
The mucilages and mild diuretic action need generous hydration to properly flush the urinary tract. Without water, effectiveness is limited.
Both are diuretics. Couch grass adds mucilaginous protection of the mucous membranes — ideal for urinary tract irritation. Java tea is more strongly diuretic — better for fluid retention.
