Coltsfoot is traditionally described as demulcent, expectorant, antitussive, anticatarrhal and diuretic. Mucilage is linked with its soothing feel, while tannins and flavonoids complement the profile. It contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, so amount, duration and batch quality are particularly important.
Recorded uses of the herb include spasmodic or dry cough, irritated throat and catarrh. Older sources mention chronic or acute bronchitis, whooping cough and asthmatic breathing specifically; severe or persistent cases require medical assessment. Pneumonia also appears in older sources, but it requires prompt medical assessment.
The leaves are chosen for a soothing feel in the throat. Its historic reputation as a specific cough herb is paired with strictly short use because of pyrrolizidine alkaloids.
Add 1 g of dried leaves to 200 ml boiling water, cover for 10 minutes and strain well. Drink 1–2 times daily in a short course.
The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
For a more soothing tea combine with marshmallow or mallow. A small amount of thyme may be added for a more aromatic blend.
Traditionally they are used for dry or spasmodic cough and an irritated throat, taken in small sips.
Yes. Both contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids and are not intended for prolonged or continuous use.
No. They are contraindicated in pregnancy and avoided in breastfeeding, children and liver disease.
