What it is

Chicory is a bitter aromatic herb in the daisy family. The dried herb is traditionally selected for mild digestive discomfort, fullness and slow digestion.

Key properties

The dried herb contains bitter lactones, phenolic acids and flavonoids. Its bitter, lightly aromatic taste is traditionally associated with aperitif, digestive and mildly diuretic properties.

Uses

European herbal tradition uses chicory for:

  • loss of appetite
  • indigestion
  • gas
  • fullness
  • constipation

Its bitter taste makes it especially useful before meals when appetite is the focus and after meals when digestive comfort is preferred.

Broader traditional references connect chicory with the liver, bile, urinary tract, gout and rheumatic complaints, giving it a lasting place among classic European bitter herbs.

Preparation & dosage

Infusion

Use 1–2 g dried herb in 200 ml boiling water. Cover for 10 minutes and strain. Drink once or twice daily, preferably before a meal when appetite is the focus.

The quantities are indicative and are based on traditional use and published phytotherapy literature. For prolonged use or when taking medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Pairs well with

For digestion combine with artichoke or dandelion. For mild constipation it may be paired with flaxseed and adequate water intake.

Choose herbs to add together with Chicory dried herb.

Precautions

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Avoid medicinal amounts because safety data are insufficient.
  • Gallstones or bile-duct obstruction: Seek medical advice before using bitter, bile-stimulating herbs.
  • Allergy: Avoid with known allergy to plants in the Asteraceae family.
